Lights above the guests allow for better coverage and an enhanced party atmosphere

The music starts to get a little louder, the beats are more upbeat, the mood in the room is people want to dance.  All of a sudden a lot of color comes from the DJ stand and about a dozen people hit the dance floor.  Then, the color disappears!  What happened?  Well, the DJ’s lights may be set too low.

As a wedding DJ who started including dance lights when most were upcharging, we saw many years ago that birthday parties, corporate events and pretty much any celebration with a dance floor had an increased enjoyment level among the guests.  This made it more fun for the organizers or bride & groom because their guests were having such a great time.

In the above scenario, the party has started but the fun may have been brought to a halt because the lights are placed too low.  A good spread of dance lights really makes a difference and we’ve seen several DJs who affix their lights below the speaker.  What does this mean to your party?  That the people closest to the lights are going to absorb all the light, most will be hit in the face with bright lights, and your guests wont enjoy themselves as much as they should.

Proper light placement makes a big difference when it comes to livening up the crowd.  Light stands are typically made to go up to nine feet, while speaker stands typically top out at six feet–though you can get stands that extend further.  When DJs use trusses, the lights are on the truss above the DJ or above the crowd.  This allows for optimal spread of the lights which further enhances the atmosphere.  With guests dancing on the dance floor, they see the lights on themselves, their friends, family, etc. while having a great time.

Proper placement would also have lights reflecting off of walls or ceilings depending on the set-up.  Make sure your DJ understands proper light set-up before you sign that contract.  It’s a very basic principle of being a DJ that offers dance lights.
