This has been a common question, mainly from our younger fans.  Beats by Dr. Dre are the “it” thing right now, a fad that will eventually go the way of the Cabbage Patch Kid or Voltron.

For those that don’t know, Beats by Dr. Dre are headphones.  Plain and simple, they’re headphones.  And honestly, they’re not really that much better than the mass-produced headphones you can get from the dollar store.  We’ve been saying it since they came out; the sound quality just isn’t there, the construction of the headphones feels cheap, and they look like cheap knock-offs as it is.

There have been many reports coming in, a few linked in this post, that have talked about how cheaply made this product is.  And when you’re spending $100, $200, or more on what amounts to a personal listening device, you might want to spend some time and consider all the various technologies that are out there.  Beats typically use the least quality products and the headphones don’t provide quality when compared to other brands.  And there have been many reviews on other brands.

While it looked good as a status symbol upon it’s release in the early 90’s, the Reebok Pump shoes did provide some additional support.  So when those “$100 shoes” first came out and people were claiming it was a fad, it was.  Until people realized that they did help your feet.  Beats however, do nothing functional beyond play music.  And that’s about it, you need to be very protective of Beats so they don’t break.

While having all the latest and greatest gadgets looks cool, do you want your DJ to “look cool”, or would you want him/her using equipment that gives you great sound, awesome lights, and a tremendous atmosphere?  To help you decide, the next time you’re looking for headphones, we’ve provided a few links above, and a video below to help you with your decision.

It’s great that there are options out there to choose from, though it’s best to avoid the fads.  We’ve received resumes from young DJs who want to get into the business who state they use Beats before they mention any of their equipment or experience.  When it all comes down to it, what the DJ wears on his/her ears to preview songs, isn’t necessary, though when looking for someone to put on your head to listen to music, Beats isn’t it.  If you want something to give you some “cred” and give you a status symbol, then Beats is your choice.
