In the world of pretty much every movie from the 80’s and 90’s being remade, it’s just par for the course that music is too.  And that’s what we’ll talk about here are first dance songs that have been covered and updated.

Some songs, you can’t beat the original.  “Wagon Wheel” by Old Crow Medicine Show comes to mind.  All respect to Darius Rucker, his remake of it does include a new sound, but it’s still not the original.

The Knot: 20 Best First Dance Wedding Songs by Anja Winikka

There are some times when the original still works, or even a remake of the song has made it’s own mark on the wedding world.  “The Best Is Yet to Come” was originally performed by Frank Sinatra, then Tony Bennett covered it.  Both have been requested to be played at weddings we’ve performed.

Sometimes, a more recent version better fits the couple.  Groups like Pentatonix and the Glee Cast cover a lot of popular hits and make them their own.  It’s a more recent sound, but with a classic twist that covers a wide range at your wedding.

One song that’s on The Knot’s list that we don’t know if we agree with them, is Heaven by DJ Sammy which was a remake of a Bryan Adams hit of the same name.  The DJ Sammy version has a little more of a dance/club beat to it than Adams’ version.  Both are good to dance too, but expect them to be long (so you better have comfortable dancing shoes on), and to change the pace of your dancing somewhat.

When choosing your first dance song, we always recommend choosing something that’s personal to you and your fiance.  Choose a song with special meaning and dance to it.  You can even have the DJ announce why the song was chosen, or put it in your program.  You don’t need to always choose a slow song, but choose something that has meaning to you!
